Maria Bozoky conjured this watercolour and ink drawing, Debussy: Sunken Cathedral, on paper. I love the way the ink lines dance around, trying to capture the essence of this architectural wonder. It’s like she’s sketching her memory of a dream. The colours are muted, watery; blues and browns wash across the surface, punctuated by that intense red in the windows and the rose window. See how the ink creates a kind of skeleton, giving the Cathedral form, while the watercolour blurs the edges. It’s not about precision, but about feeling. Look at the bottom right corner, the artist’s signature, “Bozoky”, scrawled with the same impulsive energy as the rest of the piece. This reminds me of the work of Cy Twombly, another artist who wasn't afraid to embrace the messy, the unfinished. Art is about the conversation, not the final word.
