Maria Bozoky made this small painting, *Mr. Lobkowitz in Roudnice*, with watercolor and ink. The blues and reds, with some light yellows, feel open and kind of free. I can imagine the process of its coming into being, maybe a shift between control and intuition, or between intention and accident. A negotiation, like most paintings are. The ink outlines describe the architecture and the figure and it’s all kind of wobbly, not too precise. I’m guessing she wasn’t going for precision. I feel like Bozoky was interested in a kind of feeling of place. Or maybe she was thinking about the act of bearing witness? There’s a lot of emotional content embedded in the color, which, when combined with the drawn marks, allows the artwork to resonate. All painters are in an ongoing exchange of ideas, inspiring one another’s creativity. Uncertainty is inherent, and that’s where multiple interpretations and meaning can come from.
