This evocative watercolour, 'In a Tower in Strasbourg,' was made by Maria Bozoky, though we don't know exactly when. Look at how Bozoky has built this interior space with washes of translucent colour. Those greens and blues feel so fresh, like the air after it has rained. There’s a looseness to the composition that makes the image feel like a fleeting impression, captured in a moment. The drawing seems almost accidental, like one of Cy Twombly's quick sketches, more interested in the feeling of a place than a photographic likeness. I can imagine Bozoky standing in that tower, quickly daubing these colours, capturing the light. Painting offers us the potential for ongoing conversations across time, inspiring one another's creativity, inviting multiple readings of the same thing. There is no fixed meaning. Bozoky’s watercolour is an intimate gesture, a personal encounter with a place, but, like all art, once it’s out in the world it takes on a life of its own.
