Maria Bozoky made this watercolor and ink artwork, titled "In a Court in Prague", at an unknown date. Look at how the washes of pink and blue meet the black calligraphic lines! It feels so immediate, as though it were painted on site, en plein air as they say. I can picture her rapidly sketching to capture the architectural space and figure before the light changed. What was Bozoky thinking as she moved her brush and pen? Was she interested in the woman with the cane? The imposing architecture? Maybe she was just vibing on the atmosphere of the place. I feel like this work is less about Prague specifically, and more about what it feels like to be in a specific space, with its shadows and arches and strange perspective. And that signature! It just barely sits there in the corner. Painters are always in conversation with each other, even across time and place. When I look at this, I think of other artists, like Bonnard or Vuillard, or even Guston, who embrace this kind of ambiguity and uncertainty, and leave space for our interpretations.
