Maria Bozoky made 'Visitor in Prague' with watercolors and ink, creating a visual diary of her travels. Look at how Bozoky builds the city with layers of transparent washes. See the way the buildings almost float, their forms dissolving into the misty atmosphere. The paint is applied thinly, allowing the paper to breathe through, creating a sense of lightness. But then there are those assertive ink lines, scratching across the surface, mapping out the architecture with a nervous energy. I keep coming back to the steeple on the right of the canvas, it's been built up from layers of brown, red, and white. It’s a simple shape, yet it anchors the whole composition, like a small exclamation mark in a dream. Bozoky's approach reminds me a little of Raoul Dufy, another artist who captured the vibrancy of urban life with quick, gestural marks. But where Dufy’s paintings are bright and sunny, Bozoky’s work feels more introspective, almost melancholic. Art isn’t about answers, it’s about questions, about embracing the unknown.
