Maria Bozoky made "Towers in Prague" using what looks like crayon or oil pastel, and there's a definite sense of scratching and scraping. The colours are dark, but there's a luminosity that comes from the way the colours are layered. Looking at the surface, you can really feel the texture. It's not smooth, it's got this raw, almost urgent quality. The lines are built up and kind of fighting with each other, especially around the buildings. See that figure floating above the rooftop? It looks almost like it's sketched with a single breath, adding a sense of movement to the solid architecture. This piece reminds me a bit of some of the early expressionist painters, like Kirchner. There's a similar feeling of emotional intensity, of trying to capture not just what you see, but how you feel. Art isn’t about answers, it’s about the conversation.
