This is a pamphlet by Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries, made at some point in the early 20th century. It seems to be done with simple drawing materials. The sketchiness and handwritten elements give it a real personal touch, like it’s come straight from the artist’s notebook. What strikes me is the process feel, the way the image sits on the paper. You can see the ghost of the artist's hand in these sketched elements. Some of the images feel unfinished, the bell in the last image is only partially rendered, but its enough. The red blocks behind each image work so well, giving a punch and some structure to the page. The flames at the bottom, simple but effective, are a treat for the eye. It reminds me of the work of someone like Paul Klee, using simple colours and graphic elements to create a sense of depth. What a great piece!
