Dankvart Dreyer made this study of beech canopies and an oak trunk with pencil on paper. Trees, in art, often stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time and the cycles of nature. The oak, in particular, has been a potent symbol across cultures. We find it in ancient Greek mythology, associated with Zeus, the king of the gods, embodying strength and endurance. Yet, observe how Dreyer’s delicate rendering softens this traditional symbolism. The fine lines, almost hesitant, invite a sense of introspection. Think back to Caspar David Friedrich's solitary trees reaching towards the heavens. Here, Dreyer presents a less dramatic, more intimate view. It’s as if he’s capturing the quiet, persistent force of life, a memory of nature. The grid lines, visible beneath the drawing, suggests an artist trying to control nature in a rational way. Consider, then, how the symbolic weight of the oak evolves, shifts, and resurfaces, shaped by the collective memory and emotional landscape of each era.
