This print, "Très Parisien," was made by G-P. Joumard in 1925, and it's got that flat, graphic quality that feels so of its time. The mark-making here is all about crisp lines and defined shapes, which totally suits the subject: fashion! Looking at the two figures, I love how Joumard used blocks of color to create form. The purple dress on the left is so elegant, while the blue striped one on the right feels a bit more playful. The artist really captured the essence of Art Deco style. There is a shadow beneath the figures, and what is that, a bush with white blossoms? Note the pink ground. It's like Joumard is constructing a stylish world. This print reminds me a bit of Erte's fashion illustrations. Both artists had this knack for capturing the glamour and sophistication of the era. And of course, art is always a conversation, a back-and-forth between artists and ideas, leaving it open for us to bring our own interpretations to the mix.
