Editor: Here we have de Reuter’s “Kaart van de Scandinavische landen in de nieuwe tijd,” or Map of Scandinavia in the Modern Age, created in 1696. It’s an engraving, I believe. Looking at it, I am immediately struck by the density of information. What historical insights does this map offer us? Curator: This map, produced during a period of significant geopolitical shifts in Northern Europe, serves as a powerful artifact for understanding early modern conceptions of space and power. Note how meticulously territories are defined and labelled. Consider the relationship between cartography and state power; who controlled the production and distribution of such maps, and how did they influence perceptions of territory and national identity? Editor: So, beyond just showing locations, the map itself was a political tool? Curator: Precisely. Maps were commissioned by states and powerful individuals to visualise their dominion. The details included—or omitted—became declarations of sovereignty and ambition. Note the symbolic elements, such as the crests and titles; they reinforce claims of authority and influence. How might this map have been used to justify or promote certain political agendas? Editor: I hadn't considered how actively these maps shaped perceptions. It makes me think about the role of visual representation in constructing and reinforcing historical narratives. Curator: Indeed. This map isn’t just a passive record; it’s an active participant in the politics of its time. Thinking about its creation and reception highlights how intertwined art, power, and social influence truly are. Editor: This has totally shifted my view of maps! Thanks.
