Passage was created by Yaacov Agam using serigraphy, also known as silkscreen printing, a process that’s all about layering. In silkscreen printing, a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. One color is applied at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multi-colored image. The inherent qualities of color, form and rhythm in Passage come directly from Agam's innovative application of the silkscreen process. Silkscreening emerged from industrial printing practices, but artists like Agam adopted it for its versatility and potential for mass production. This method allowed artists to explore the relationship between art and consumer culture, questioning traditional notions of artistic skill. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns here involved repetitive labor in its production. Thinking about the methods of production and the context, highlights how the artist challenges traditional views on fine art and craft.
