L.C. by Edward Ruscha

Dimensions sheet: 94 x 68.6 cm (37 x 27 in.)

Editor: So, this is Edward Ruscha’s "L.C." It presents this intriguing wooden panel effect, with a sort of shadow cast upon it. I find it quite playful, almost like a trompe-l'oeil. What do you make of it? Curator: It's funny you say playful, because that's what grabbed me first too. It’s so cheeky! Ruscha's playing with this tension between what's real and what's represented. How can something so solid as wood feel so…illusory? It feels very California, right? Editor: Absolutely! That constant sunshine and those light-hearted vibes. Curator: Exactly! Plus, he is using text as image, or is it image as text, or maybe that's the point. The shadow makes the "L.C." almost disappear, leaving the wood to speak. Clever, right? Editor: It definitely changes how I see things. Thanks! Curator: You’re welcome! Art is a game sometimes, isn't it?
