Doreen Reid Nakamarra made this painting, called *Untitled (Rockhole Site of Marrapinti)*, with what looks like fine brushes or sticks to create these delicate lines. The whole thing feels like a meditation on mark-making, a conversation between the hand and the surface. The surface is alive with these repetitive gestures. The texture is really interesting; you can almost feel the rhythm of her hand as she worked. I love the variation in the lines, some thick, some thin, creating a kind of visual vibration. Notice how she lets the ochre ground peek through, especially in the center panel. That bit of warm color really makes the black lines sing. It's like a landscape seen through a screen. Nakamarra reminds me of Agnes Martin, both artists create these meditative, repetitive works. Both artists also embrace ambiguity and resist fixed meanings.
