David Michael Hinnebusch made this piece, Dads Sons Cars Waves, with paint, and seemingly, a lot of uninhibited energy. There's a real sense of urgency in the marks here, a kind of 'go for it' attitude that I find both brave and infectious. Look at the way he's layered those colors – yellows, blues, and blacks crashing into each other like a rogue ocean wave. The physicality of the paint is so present; it’s not just about representation but about the pure joy (and maybe anxiety) of making. There's this one section, a swirl of dark paint towards the left, that feels particularly charged. It’s like he's wrestling with the medium, trying to capture something elusive, maybe the fleeting nature of memory itself. I love how he’s unafraid to leave things unresolved, embracing the mess and the ambiguity. It reminds me a little of Cy Twombly’s work, that same willingness to let the process dictate the outcome. Ultimately, art is about the conversation between the artist, the materials, and the viewer, a messy, beautiful dialogue that never really ends.
