David Michael Hinnebusch made this painting, S P S, with what looks like acrylic and mixed media on canvas. It’s a total eruption of color and form, with figures and abstract shapes battling it out on the surface. Looking at the lower center of the piece there's a kind of struggle being depicted in thick impasto. See that vivid pink, almost bleeding into the blacks and greens surrounding it? It feels like a raw nerve, a burst of emotion. The linear elements remind me of Cy Twombly, but with a rougher, more urgent feel. There's a real sense of process here, the layering and scraping away of paint, the visible struggle to find form in the chaos. And that's what makes it so alive, so compelling. It’s like Hinnebusch is inviting us into his own messy, beautiful process of making sense of the world.
