David Michael Hinnebusch's *Pierre, McQueen, Taylor* is a square format painting that has been built up through layers of chaotic and frenetic marks in bold colors. There is an energy here. I imagine Hinnebusch circling and pacing, possessed by an urgent need to get something out. The surface seems to be a battleground for different painterly impulses. There are representational renderings of faces in a muted palette, and then these expressive splashes of red and blue cutting across the canvas, obscuring them. The tension between control and chaos seems at the core of Hinnebusch's project. Maybe he's thinking about how the self is fragmented and how identity gets built through layers of perception. Artists are magpies, and this feels part of a larger conversation, echoing the work of Cy Twombly or Jean-Michel Basquiat, where writing and drawing mix. And then there is this real openness - you get the feeling there are no mistakes, only discoveries. It is an invitation to see the world in a new way.
