David Batchelor made this piece, I Love King’s Cross and King’s Cross Loves Me, using lightboxes, colored plastic and wheels. The way they are scattered on the floor it feels like the beginning of a dance, or the end of a game. The colors are so saturated and artificial, like something out of a cartoon or an advertisement. They are definitely not colors you would find in nature. The plastic has a cool, smooth surface that contrasts with the warmth of the wooden floor. The lightboxes have wheels, so that they can be moved around, creating new compositions and relationships. It reminds me a bit of some of Dan Flavin's work with fluorescent lights, but with a playful, almost childlike quality. I love how this piece transforms the space around it, making you see the world in a new and unexpected way. Batchelor is great at finding the extraordinary in the ordinary.
