Charlotte Posenenske created “Relief, Series B” as part of her exploration of industrial materials and their potential for artistic expression. Posenenske was a German artist who was active during the 1960s until her untimely departure from the art world in 1968. Her art was deeply influenced by her experiences living in post-war Germany. This social context led to a critical view of consumerism and the art market. She moved away from traditional art forms, creating modular sculptures that challenged the boundaries between art and industrial design. These sculptures, like the "Relief, Series B", were often made of materials like sheet metal, emphasizing simplicity and functionality. Posenenske's decision to abandon art was rooted in her belief that art could not affect social change, therefore, she dedicated her life to sociology. Her work continues to provoke questions about art's role in society, and the relationship between aesthetics and utility. The industrial aesthetic speaks to her desire to remove the artist’s ego and create something anyone could produce.
