This is a map of Norfolk Island, delineated with ink by an anonymous hand. Note the compass rose, a symbol steeped in maritime history, pointing to cardinal directions, north, south, east, and west. The compass rose is a motif that transcends simple navigation. It evokes the great voyages of discovery, of mankind’s deep-seated urge to explore the unknown. This symbol echoes through the ages, from ancient mariners guided by the stars to Renaissance explorers charting new worlds. Yet, even in its evolution, the compass rose retains its primal allure, stirring within us the yearning for adventure and the hope of unveiling the mysteries of the world. The compass rose speaks to our shared human experience. It represents a deep-seated need to understand our place in the world, a desire to chart our own course.
