This print, 'Het laatste kattekwaad van Poes Snorbaart', or 'The Last Mischief of Cat Whiskers,' shows us the colourful tale of a cat, told panel by panel. The artist, Lamouche, used line drawing, with flat watercolour washes in a way that feels both fresh and old fashioned. There’s a playful quality to how the figures are drawn. Lamouche doesn't hide the process; the lines are clear, the colours bright and simple. In one panel we see the cat falling headfirst into a barrel of water, legs flailing about! There’s something so dynamic about this scene. The water splashes are rendered with quick, energetic strokes, giving a real sense of movement. Lamouche’s storytelling reminds me of someone like William Steig, the way they both use simple lines and colours to create such expressive and engaging characters. It’s a reminder that art is about communication, about sharing ideas and stories in a way that resonates with others, even across time.
