This cautionary tale called ‘The Accidents of Naughty Children’ was printed without a known date by an artist named Gordinne. It’s rendered with lithography, a printmaking technique that allows for soft, blended colors and fine details, similar to a drawing. I can almost imagine Gordinne at the lithography stone, carefully layering each scene, each naughty act and its consequences. It reminds me that making art is like trying to figure something out; each mark is an experiment, a thought, a little step into the unknown. The images are rendered in simple compositions and tell a clear story. One scene in particular catches my eye: a wizard transforming children at a dinner table into pigs! The children are misbehaving at the table, and the magician is teaching them a lesson by turning them into pigs, it’s a moment of fantastical justice. Painting, like printmaking, can be a form of storytelling, where the artist brings their imagination to life. Just like Gordinne, we’re all in conversation with the past, borrowing ideas, and making them our own!
