Carolina Onnen, who also went by Loentje, made this photo album page sometime in the last century with photographs from a holiday in Noordwijk. It makes me think about how the artist found this particular arrangement of images. I can imagine the artist shuffling photos around, positioning and re-positioning, to create rhythms, tensions, and connections. Was she thinking about the differences between the photographs, or trying to emphasize their similarities? The soft sepia tones bring a cohesiveness to the work. Photography has always felt magical to me; it is a strange alchemy between the eye, the hand, and the light. It is a way of capturing a specific moment and preserving it. Artists like Onnen use it to connect us to the people, places, and histories they hold dear. It invites us into a shared space of imagination.
