Carolina Onnen, or Loentje as she was known, made these three holiday snaps in Noordwijk, likely around the 1920s. They are pasted onto a dark grey page in a photo album, which makes them feel so personal. The sepia tone gives everything this warm, nostalgic atmosphere. I just love how these pictures aren’t perfect, you know? They’re blurry and imperfect, but that's what makes them feel so real. The texture of the photographs themselves, all grainy and soft, makes you want to reach out and touch them. Check out the photo of the woman standing and see how the light is blown out behind her; it's like the sun is swallowing everything up. The image becomes a kind of impression, a trace of a moment passed. Like a whisper from the past. Think of someone like Atget, but with a real personal twist. These images feel more like a diary than a series of objective records.
