Here we have three photographs of people in the dunes, made by Carolina (Loentje) Frederika Onnen. What's really striking about these is how they embrace the unexpected, the imperfections that make art feel alive. Look at the top image, where the photo is torn - it reminds me that art is not precious, it can be handled, it can be damaged, but still speak to us. I love the way the soft sepia tones create a dreamlike atmosphere, blurring the line between reality and memory. The figures in the dunes seem to almost blend into the landscape, as if they are emerging from it. Consider the way Onnen leaves traces of her process visible – the composition invites us to reflect on the passage of time, the shifting of sands, and the ephemeral nature of human presence. It reminds me a little of early Julia Margaret Cameron, in the way that it embraces this sense of light and shadow, but with her own distinctive voice, and in the end, art is really about finding your own voice, isn’t it?
