These two photographs of Guly Boissevain on horseback and Dany with a woman were made in 1907. Isn’t it funny how sepia tones can transport you to a different time? I am interested in the way that the subdued colour palette invites a sense of nostalgia. The dark and light areas of the photograph are crucial. Look at the way that the subdued tones of the background almost flatten the image, making it more immediate. I love how the details of the images are captured. You can almost feel the sun beating down on Guly on horseback, and the way that the background hazes into the distance. The dark hues and subtle differences in tone creates a sense of space and atmosphere. In some ways, the photographs make me think of Gerhard Richter’s paintings from photographs. Both artists are interested in ideas of representation and memory. Ultimately, the piece is enigmatic. Like all good art, it raises more questions than it answers.
