This page of photographs was made by Carolina (Loentje) Frederika Onnen in 1911. Look at how she's arranged the images on the page, almost like a painter composes a canvas. It's a subtle layering, a conversation between the pictures themselves, and their connection to the brown page that holds them. The images have a faded warmth, like a memory softened by time. Each photo is a little window into Onnen's world, with snapshots of friends caught in candid moments. I love how the edges of the photographs aren’t perfectly aligned, it gives a feeling of intimacy, as if we are looking through a personal scrapbook of Loentje's life. Onnen has titled each of the images, in a cursive script, and these descriptions are as important as the images themselves, adding an extra layer of meaning to the composition. The images and text combined give a sense of the passing of time, a theme which is explored by artists like Christian Boltanski. Ultimately the work is about capturing a fleeting moment, a visual poem of friendship and connection.
