Mathieu Lauweriks made this memory sheet to Willem Everts, but when I look at it, I imagine the artist’s hand, meticulously carving each letter and figure. It’s so graphic; everything is so linear, so considered. I can almost feel the scratching and mark-making. It’s all monochromatic. Can you imagine how long it took to make all those marks? It’s not exactly a painting, but it has that same texture and form. The figures on either side look like angels, and that text! It’s not something I would usually make, but I can relate to the labor. There is such a conversation among artists. We’re all just trying to make sense of the world. It's a testament to how dedication and hard work come through a piece. This piece is such a conversation of ideas.
