Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this poster design with ink and graphite, and what’s interesting is how the process itself becomes visible to us. You can imagine Cachet mapping out the architecture of the page, framing it, and then filling it with information. It’s cool to think about the choices the artist made here. Why this font? Why this border? How do you balance the need to communicate information with the desire to create something beautiful and eye-catching? I imagine Cachet thinking about who his influences were. Perhaps he was looking at the posters of artists like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec or Jan Toorop, both of whom were masters of the form. In a way, all artists are always having a conversation across time, looking at the work of others, and responding to it in their own way. There’s always a sense of exchange and dialogue that makes art so exciting.
