This postcard to Anne Marie Louise van der Linden was made by Emile Bernard, it's hard to say exactly when. The writing on the postcard is so direct, you can almost feel the writer's hand guiding the pen across the surface. The ink is light, like diluted black, and the writing is full of loops. I wonder what Bernard was thinking when he wrote it? It could be a thank you note, a quick hello, or maybe something more intimate. I can imagine him writing the message quickly, barely pausing to consider each word. Bernard was pals with Gauguin and Van Gogh so he was probably thinking a lot about how to communicate through images and words. It’s like they were all riffing off each other, trying to find new ways of seeing and feeling. For me, this card feels like a little piece of that conversation, a whisper across time.
