This postcard was written by Eugénie Clapier-Houchart, but when, where, and with what materials, it's hard to know! I mean, all postcards are the same and all postcards are different. Imagine Eugénie sitting down at her desk, pen in hand, thinking about what to write. The script is a series of greetings and pleasantries, wishes for health and happiness, and an invitation to visit. The ink is a dark shade of grey, contrasting with the cream of the paper. Look at how the loops and curves of the letters form a kind of dance, echoing the dancer printed on the stamp at the top. And the handwriting itself, how it leans and tilts across the page, like a field swaying in the breeze! I always wonder, you know, about what’s left unsaid. What were her hopes, her fears, her dreams? As an artist, it is interesting to look at the different scripts and how they are layered. Isn’t it something, how a simple gesture like writing a postcard can carry so much feeling, so much intention, across time and space? It’s like a painting in that way, an act of reaching out, of making contact, of leaving a mark.
