This is an image of a postcard addressed to Pieter Haverkorn van Rijsewijk, director of Museum Boijmans, sent by F. Ritter from Rotterdam. The ink is black and the handwriting is elegant and full of curves and flourishes. You can almost imagine F. Ritter carefully writing each word, thinking about the message they wanted to convey. The stamps and seals mark the passage of this card through time and space, each leaving its mark on the surface. The Rotterdam seal is particularly striking, with its bold letters and decorative flourishes – it's like a tiny abstract painting. The red stamp is a small splash of color and hints at the larger political and cultural context of the time. You know, artists communicate in so many ways, sometimes with just the angle of their mark. It is clear that Ritter wants to communicate with the director in a way that will please him, as well as get a message across. I’m sure that Pieter Haverkorn van Rijsewijk was pleased to receive such a beautiful piece of mail.
