This is a postcard to Andries Bonger from Emile Bernard, probably made with ink, maybe around 1910 if I’m reading that postmark right. What’s cool is that it’s not a picture, but just writing, and all kinds of marks from the postal service itself. I love how the handwriting sort of dances across the surface, with this mix of formal loops and casual slants. The smudged stamps add another layer, almost like abstract shapes floating on the page. Look at the way the ink bleeds a bit; it's like the words are breathing, expanding beyond their neat little forms. There's a real physical presence to this piece, despite being just a message. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, in a way, that sense of language becoming almost sculptural. It's as if Bernard wasn't just writing words, but making a kind of drawing with them. Isn’t it great when art embraces these accidents? It reminds us that nothing is ever truly fixed or finished.
