This is a page of text made by Niels Larsen Stevns, sometime before 1941. It’s a transcription of something else, so already second-hand, twice-told. The handwriting is confident but not showy, practical. It reminds me of looking through my own notebooks - there’s something intimate and revealing about seeing someone else’s thoughts laid out in this way. Each letter is carefully formed, but the lines lean and slope, eager to get the words down. The ink is dark, almost black, creating a strong contrast with the pale paper. It's all about the immediacy of the writing; not so different from drawing. Look at the way the lines of text march down the page, each one a little different from the last. There is a rhythm to it, a kind of visual music, that invites you to slow down and really look. Like a conversation, or an exchange of ideas between the past and the present. It makes me think of Cy Twombly.
