This page of handwritten notes on the saga of Knud the Holy in Vendsyssel, by Niels Larsen Stevns, is full of scribbled words and thoughts. I like to imagine Stevns in his studio, obsessively working on a larger painting. He's got his brushes caked with paint, his mind racing with ideas. What I'm drawn to is the artist's touch. It's so personal and intimate. Look at the looping lines, the way the ink seems to dance across the page. Each word is like a brushstroke, building up layers of meaning and emotion. You can almost feel Stevns's hand moving across the page, wrestling with ideas and trying to capture something elusive. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's scribbled paintings or the raw energy of Basquiat's notebooks. Artists are always in conversation with each other, riffing off each other's ideas and pushing the boundaries of what painting can be. This humble page is a reminder that art is about process, exploration, and the messy, beautiful struggle to make sense of the world.
