Curatorial notes
Simon Fokke created this print titled 'Vier episodes uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis' using etching. The composition is divided into four distinct rectangular panels, each presenting a vignette rendered in meticulous detail. Fokke uses the formal structure of each panel to present narratives through landscape and figure arrangement. The use of vertical lines – trees, buildings – creates a structured space, drawing the eye upward. At the same time, the light and shadow, achieved through fine lines, add depth, making each scene almost tactile. The human figures, though small, are central to the narratives. Note how the figures are arranged in the first panel around a central couple holding hands, suggesting unity or agreement. Through the combination of form and narrative, Fokke invites a reading of history not just as a series of events, but as a sequence of moments that shape cultural identity. This etching serves as a reminder that how we see and understand our past is always mediated through form.
