This page from a sketchbook was made by J.A. Jerichau (II) sometime before 1916, and it's filled with tight, looping script in what looks like graphite. Imagine the artist hunched over the page, wrestling with ideas about "The Ring" and its significance for the imagination, not to mention those ancient gods and heroes! I can almost feel the scratch of the pencil, the pressure and release as thoughts poured out. What was Jerichau trying to capture? The physicality of the writing, the way the letters crowd together, it feels like an attempt to pin down something vast and amorphous. You know, I bet Jerichau would have admired Cy Twombly's scrawls and glyphs, that same sense of reaching for something just beyond language. It's a reminder that artists are always in conversation, riffing on the themes and obsessions of those who came before. And that the act of making, whether it’s writing or painting, is a way of thinking, a way of grappling with the messy, beautiful, and ultimately unknowable world.
