This page of scribbled notes, “Notater om Newton[?], Darwin og moral,” was made by J.A. Jerichau (II). He was wrestling with Newton, Darwin, and morality, and the human condition too, by the looks of it, in ink on paper. See how the marks aren't precious? They’re just there to capture an idea, a thought, a connection. There's a diagram that looks like a chemical equation or some kind of philosophical see-saw. I like the way the ink bleeds a little into the fibers of the paper, it’s very immediate, a real record of the artist's thinking, the ideas practically pouring out. It reminds me of Cy Twombly's notebooks, full of false starts and scribbled ideas. Both artists show us that artmaking is a process, not a product, and that sometimes the most interesting art is the stuff that's never meant to be seen. It’s the artist just trying to figure things out, embracing the ambiguity, more questions than answers.
