This page of notes, concerning creative power and the renaissance, was made by J.A. Jerichau (II) around the turn of the century. The writing is very light, almost ephemeral, as if the words are barely clinging to the page. You get the impression of ideas rapidly being captured as they pass through the artist's mind. The marks, in a pale ink, have an incredible lightness, giving a sense of the artist's hand moving quickly across the page. Look closely, and you can see how the pen sometimes catches on the paper, leaving a slightly darker trace. This immediacy makes the process feel almost like a direct connection to the artist's thoughts, as though we're looking at something deeply private and unfiltered. The overall effect is one of fleeting thoughts and momentary insights. This reminds me a little of Cy Twombly, though Twombly's marks are grander, more flamboyant somehow. Maybe this is because the notes are so raw and unedited, as if we're witnessing the artist in the act of thinking, rather than the finished product. In art, as in life, the process is often where the real magic happens.
