This page of script, made by J.A. Jerichau sometime before 1916, is full of philosophical musings on art and creation. Look at the loops of the handwriting, like the artist's hand was in constant motion, forming and reforming ideas on the page. I can imagine the artist, pen in hand, wrestling with these big ideas, like ‘time, space, form, tension, unity, and infinity’. There is an urgency to capture these thoughts as they come. I wonder, were these notes for paintings never made? Or maybe they’re the secret ingredients, the invisible scaffolding, for works we can no longer see? Like Raphael, Jerichau was trying to find harmonies in the constellations, or maybe just a way to understand the relationships between things. It reminds me that making art is a constant conversation across time, each artist building on what came before, grappling with the same questions in their own way.
