This page of notations was made by J.A. Jerichau, sometime before 1916, probably with graphite on paper. The artist seems to be mapping out a whole philosophy of artmaking, touching on everything from Raphael and the Renaissance to the cosmos itself! The writing is dense, but also loose and flowing, almost like a stream-of-consciousness thing. The lines are really varied, some are dark and emphatic, others are just barely there, a whisper on the page. And the words! They’re like little constellations themselves: "Time - Space - Form - Tension - Unity - Infinity.” I love that Jerichau sees these ideas as interconnected, a kind of feedback loop where everything influences everything else. There’s a real sense of urgency here, like the artist is trying to capture something huge and complex before it slips away. It reminds me of the notebooks of Hilma af Klint, both artists were reaching for something beyond the visible world, trying to find a visual language for ideas that are almost impossible to express.
