Curator: Cildo Meireles created "Insertions into Ideological Circuits 2: Banknote Project." The concept is simple, yet profound: stamping messages onto banknotes and reintroducing them into circulation. Editor: The limited color palette and the calculated placement of the text create a fascinating tension between the object's original purpose and its new subversive function. Curator: Absolutely, it's about using the banknote as a vehicle for disseminating critical ideas. Here, the act of inscribing revolutionary slogans onto currency transforms it into a tool for social commentary. Editor: It's a study in contrasts - this delicate balance between the fragility of the material and the weight of the message. Curator: And how currency, a symbol of economic power, can become a medium to undermine that very system. Editor: I find myself appreciating how Meireles repurposes established visual systems toward different ends.

Meireles started this project during the military dictatorship in Brazil. In the face of strict state censorship he stamped messages calling for democracy and political freedom on banknotes and returned them into circulation. This work relates The Coca-Cola Project. The artist is happy for others to participate in this project, stamping their own messages on the banknotes of any country. For Meireles, the notes displayed here are only documentation. The work operates when the notes are used as currency. Gallery label, August 2020
