Lidy Prati made this playful composition of painted rectangles with I think, oil on canvas. The colour palette is so distinctive, and the way these simple forms have been arranged give the painting the feel of musical notation. The shapes are solid blocks of colour, mostly opaque, though there are some marks and blemishes visible on the painting's surface. What I find interesting is the way the shapes shift and move across the picture plane, creating a sense of implied depth. Each rectangle is clearly defined and carefully placed. The texture is smooth and even, which heightens the contrast between the shapes and the background. I can't help but think of Agnes Martin when I look at this piece. Both artists share a minimalist aesthetic and a focus on subtle variations in colour and form. But while Martin's work is often seen as spiritual or meditative, Prati's feels more grounded and playful, inviting us to engage with the pure joy of visual experience.
