Sandu Darie made this painting with a palette of red, yellow, black, and grey floating like language on a white-cream ground. I can only imagine him in his studio, moving these shapes around, trying them out, feeling his way through trial and error. It’s like he’s having a conversation with himself, or maybe with the painting itself. Like a call and response. There’s a really intriguing push and pull going on here – with the geometric forms – and a sense of play. There's this one bold black rectangle standing tall like a dark exclamation mark. It's a serious statement amidst all the lively colors. The other geometric elements are almost like different voices chiming in and adding to the overall harmony, don't you think? Looking at this work, I am reminded that artists are always in conversation, riffing off each other’s ideas across time. There's so much openness, so much potential for unexpected discoveries when you embrace ambiguity and uncertainty.
