This sculpture by Horia Damian appears to be made out of painted wood, its architectural form standing in contrast to a black background. I can imagine Horia Damian in his studio, maybe wrestling with these beams, trying to find the right angle, the perfect balance. There is a very particular tone to the pale greyish white, like a cloud. It makes me think that the artist would have been thinking about light and space. The surface is matte, almost chalky, which gives the sculpture a tangible, earthy quality. Look how the edges are not perfectly aligned, yet the overall effect feels strong. It feels like the piece could be an element of architectural sculpture. I feel a connection to what Damian was trying to achieve. Artists engage in a continuous conversation across time, building upon and responding to one another's work. There are so many possible readings here, allowing for multiple interpretations rather than fixed conclusions.
