Peter Alexander’s "Green Violet Box" is like a solid block of light, or a color sample enlarged to the scale of sculpture. There's something about the way it captures and refracts light that makes it feel alive, almost breathing. It's hard to tell exactly how Alexander achieved this effect. The surface is so smooth and seamless, it's like the color has been poured into a mold and set to harden. Looking at the color, it shifts and changes depending on the light, from a deep, saturated violet to a lighter, almost translucent green. In the lower part of the sculpture you can see the different layers of colour sitting on top of one another, as though they've been built up gradually over time. It reminds me of the light works of Robert Irwin, in that both artists are interested in the perception of space and how light can transform our understanding of it. Ultimately, “Green Violet Box” is an artwork that invites contemplation and offers a space for imaginative exploration.
