Carolina Onnen made this page of photographs, Vijf foto's van de Europese Rondvlucht te Soesterberg, with a camera and glue, probably sometime in the 1930s. What strikes me is how these faded snapshots are so tentative. They're like whispers from another time. You know, when I look at these, I think about the way memory itself is a kind of material. It's there, but it's also fragile, like these slightly yellowed prints. Onnen's careful arrangement, the way she's placed these images on the page, it’s like she's trying to hold onto something ephemeral. The handwritten captions, they are so delicate and personal, they anchor the images to a specific moment. It makes me think of Sophie Calle, another artist who deals with memory and documentation. Both artists turn the act of remembering into something physical. Art is just one big conversation, isn't it? An ongoing, ever-evolving exploration of how we see and experience the world. And these images? They are part of that beautiful, messy conversation.
