Alice Aycock, sometime in the late 20th or early 21st century, made this ‘Waterworks Sculpture Proposal for the Central Broward Regional Park’ with metal. It’s so buoyant; it’s like the metal is trying to defy its own weight, twirling and spiraling upwards. The textures of the metal play with the light, creating an intricate dance of shadows and highlights, reflecting the watery environment it sits within. I love the way Aycock uses these curving forms, it’s like a giant, abstract version of a seashell, an ode to the life-giving properties of water. The whole thing feels like a drawing in space, a meditation on movement and energy. I’m reminded of Richard Serra’s weighty steel sculptures, but where those works emphasize gravity, Aycock seems to want to take off! In the end, art is about embracing ambiguity, finding joy in the endless possibilities of form and material.
