This is Aurora by Mark di Suvero, a sculpture constructed from weathered steel. Imagine the artist out here on the grass with his blowtorch, assembling these massive steel girders into something that almost looks like a child’s toy. I can really imagine di Suvero out here, wrestling with the metal, maybe even talking to it. The way the steel is cut and bolted together seems both intuitive and carefully considered. There is a boldness in the scale and the rusty surface, but then there is a real delicacy, too, in the way the shapes interact. It's like he's sketching in three dimensions, making this weighty material feel weightless, almost airy. It reminds me a little of the work of David Smith, another sculptor who worked with steel. Both artists seem to be in conversation with the material itself, exploring its potential to express raw emotion and human experience. Like painters, sculptors are in this ongoing conversation about form, space, and the possibilities of expression.
