Eduardo Chillida's sculpture "Gudari" is made from Corten steel, a material known for its weathered, rusted appearance. Chillida didn't just select the material for its look. He was deeply engaged with the work of industrial production. Corten steel is typically used in construction, for bridges and other outdoor structures. Here, Chillida re-purposes it for artistic expression, challenging the traditional boundaries between art and the everyday. The sculpture's imposing presence is inseparable from the material's weight and strength. Its form is simple, almost architectural, yet the rusted surface adds a tactile quality, hinting at the passage of time and the forces of nature. To create this work, Chillida would have employed industrial processes, cutting and welding the steel into its final shape. Ultimately, "Gudari" invites us to reconsider our relationship with the built environment, and the ways in which materials and processes can be transformed into powerful forms of artistic expression.
