This is “Lijst van been- en armspieren in Duits en Latijn” [List of leg and arm muscles in German and Latin], made by Reijer Stolk, sometime before 1945, most likely with ink on paper. It's so fascinating how Stolk lays out all these muscles, in two languages! It's not just about information; the design is bold, graphic. Look at the confident lines and the way he balances the German with the Latin. I love how the starkness of the black ink creates these almost architectural structures. Like a blueprint, maybe? The texture of the paper—you can almost feel it, right? There is this tension between precision and maybe something a little messy? That’s what keeps me looking. The way the text is stacked and ordered really reminds me of some of the work of the conceptual artist Mel Bochner. I love this idea of art as a kind of translation, between languages, between body and representation. Anyway, there is no right or wrong way of seeing.
