This rectangular brooch by Vanzetka is made from carved bone with gold and ruby details. I'm drawn to the way it layers different materials and textures. The bone is carved with incredibly intricate details, like a tiny world captured in this small frame. Looking at the bone, you can see the careful hand that shaped it. The artist uses the creamy, matte surface of the bone to create a delicate contrast with the shiny gold and ruby. The ornate filigree reminds me of paper cutting, a form that similarly creates a lot from a little. The bone is the star of the show, but the gold and rubies add a touch of glamour. These touches lift the work from everyday folk art into something precious, transforming the piece from beautiful handcraft to high jewellery. It reminds me of Gustav Klimt, who also fused the decorative arts with something much more visceral and human. With art, it is the unexpected combinations that often make the most interesting conversations.
