"Vinaigrette," a silver box created by Samuel Pemberton around 1802-1803, is a small, yet intricate piece of art. The box features a diamond-shaped pattern on its surface, bordered by an oval frame, and a beaded edge. This small, decorative object, now housed at The Art Institute of Chicago, would have been used to hold a fragrant mixture, often salt or dried herbs, to ward off unpleasant smells. The fine craftsmanship and attention to detail in this piece is characteristic of the silverwork of the period.
